Nowadays, it seems like there’s always a new buzzword in the data world. First, it was data contracts then it was data mesh, and now it’s data stewardship.

Data stewardship caught my eye when reading about Airbnb’s data quality practices from a Staff Analytics Engineer at the company. This engineer discussed how he approached scoring data quality.

He looked at four main categories:

  • accuracy
  • reliability
  • stewardship
  • usability

The other data quality metrics are pretty familiar, as these are used in most frameworks that attempt to define quality.

Accuracy refers to how closely the actual value matches the expected value.

Reliability ensures your data is available to be used when it is needed.

Usability looks at the formatting of the data and whether it’s being stored or transformed in a way that the business can act on.

This still leaves the question of data stewardship with regard to data quality…
